Many desks use a form of chipwood with a melamine top layer for the shape of the tops. These are top quality blades and the best available material on the market. Top brands such as Ahrend & Gispen also use this fantastic material. Melamine is a plastic top layer that is pressed onto the supporting plate. So this is actually the layer that is visible to the naked eye. The supporting plate in this case is the chipboard, the type of material. Melamine is glued to the top together with an ABS bumper. This allows different colors but also wood motifs to be applied to the plates. The advantage of plastic surfaces is that they are particularly easy to keep clean and are very robust with the right quality. Melamine is used because of its easy maintenance, good hygiene and wear resistance. In addition, melamine has good resistance to crack formation.
