A desk or writing table in the sense of furniture is a table that is mainly intended for office work. The shape is usually simple, a flat desktop standing on four legs and often with one or two chests of drawers. The desk has room for papers, a telephone, a computer, etc. There is often an office chair on small wheels at a desk. A new trend in offices is the high desk for working while standing. There is often some kind of stool to lean against. The brain has to keep several variables under control while working in a standing position: body weight, small muscle contractions, etc. All these things lead to a somewhat increased stress level. Not overwhelming stress, but a level that is easy to control. Research has shown that a small dose of stress increases cognitive performance, which can therefore be beneficial in this situation.
